Our DNA
We don't sell candles. We help you say the thing you keep meaning to say.
Where we started
candēlae began in Toronto in 2020 with a simple idea and a lot of soy wax. Two people, one small workshop, and a belief that a candle could be more than décor. The first version was exactly that: nice candles, sold online, in an ocean of nice candles sold online. We learned quickly. A candle on its own is a commodity. What people were really reaching for was a way to feel close to someone far away.
What we learned
The candles that mattered most were the ones going somewhere. To a parent across the country. To a friend having a hard month. To someone who needed to hear "I am thinking of you" and could not be visited in person. People were not buying wax. They were buying a bridge. So we rebuilt the whole thing around that.
What we are now
candēlae is a way to send a moment. Every candle can carry your voice or your face. Your person scans a small QR code, and there you are, saying the words out loud. They light the candle, they hear you, and for as long as it burns, you are in the room. Hand-poured in Toronto, soy wax, made in small batches, and named after the feelings they are meant to bring back.
The ritual
The strongest way to stay close to someone is to do it more than once. That is why the heart of candēlae is the three-month gift: one candle a month, for three months, each one a fresh reason to reach out. A gift that keeps arriving, and a habit of staying connected. Pause or cancel anytime.
What we believe
- Connection over commodity. We sell closeness. The candle is the vessel.
- Made by hand, here. Poured in Toronto, soy wax, small batch, real people.
- The message makes it. A voice or a video turns a gift into a memory.
- A ritual, not a purchase. Staying close is something you do again and again.
